Let’s face it, we all want the best hair health and beauty tricks, but how do you know where to start?
After all, every season our hair seems to change. In the summer, it often needs more clarifying treatments to remove chlorine buildup or it may need extra moisture to combat the salt from your last vacation. During the winter months it’s usually all about adding moisture to combat frizz and dryness. So how do you keep up?
No matter what your hair is going through today, I’m excited to bring you guys some easy tips to make this season the best one yet! Hair health and beauty don;t have to be overly complicated. Just like most things, it’s your body. Chances are, it’s been trying to tell you what it needs but you haven’t been able to listen over all the beauty ads your bombarded with every day.
Here are a few of my favorite fall hair hacks to get you through the fall season looking and feeling your best. From all-natural masks to easy shower hacks and even ideas on how to smooth each strand while you sleep, I hope you find a few ideas that make your day just a little bit better and give you more consistent “good hair days.”
9 Hair Health And Beauty Tips:
Make A Banana & Egg Mega-Shine Treatment
I love this mask because it you likely already have both of these ingredients in your kitchen. Give your locks some serious moisture and bounce this fall with this easy at-home treatment. Just mash up a ripe banana in a bowl and add 1 egg. Mix together to form a thick paste. Apply to dry hair and leave it for 1-30 minutes before rinsing. Shampoo and condition as normal.
Sleep On A Silk Pillowcase
We all love snuggling up in our flannel sheets during the colder months, but your cotton pillowcase actually wicks needed moisture from your hair, leaving it brittle, frizzy, dry, and less manageable by morning. By switching it out and sleeping on a silk pillowcase, your hair can retain it’s moisture and even improve in texture and shine. If you don’t already own one, check out this easy DIY to make your own silk pillowcase here.
DIY Coconut Oil Deep Conditioning Mask
We all love the hydrating benefits of coconut oil, so try out this simple mask for a deep conditioning treatment. Rub coconut oil between your palms to melt and then massage into your scalp and work through your hair. Put it up in a bun and leave for a few hours if possible. (I love doing this before a workout) and then shampoo and condition as usual.
Note: If you have long or thick hair, you will likely need to shampoo twice. Also, if your scalp is oily but your strands are dry, skip the scalp massage and apply to your dry ends or visa versa.
Smooth Strands In The Shower
Heat and steam open up each hair follicle and can leave your strands more brittle and rough. When the weather outside cools, we often turn up our heaters and take longer, hotter showers. This dries out our hair almost immediately and creates so many of the problems we describe as “fall hair.” To help remedy this, right before you get out of the shower, rinse your hair with the coolest water you can handle to close your hair follicles, seal in moisture, and instantly see more shine.
Use Rosemary For Shiny, Dark Hair
Use this DIY clarifying and shine-enhancing rinse next time you’re in the shower. Steep rosemary with apple cider vinegar to create a highly-concentrated rinse. Once your are in the shower, combine a few tablespoons with water and use as a rinse after you are done shampooing and conditioning as usual. Rosemary removes excess buildup from your hair for a deep-cleansing effect and also darkens hair over time.
5 Minute, Natural Deep Conditioner
When you are short on time but want to condition dry hair, just combine 1/2 cup plain yogurt with 1 tablespoon olive oil and bring into the shower. After you have shampooed, apply the mixture to hair instead of a conditioner and let sit for 5 minutes before rinsing. You will be left with stronger, more moisturized hair.
Make A Fall Pumpkin Mask
There’s something I love about applying this great-smelling mask while drinking a pumpkin spice latte that feels so indulgent and festive. Mix pumpkin puree, yogurt, and honey to add moisture and shine this autumn. Read the full post here: 3 Easy Pumpkin Beauty Recipes. Who knew hair health and beauty could be so festive?
DIY Egg White Protein Mask
Believe it or not, your hair is made up of 80% natural proteins. Use this mask to give each strand moisture, extra bounce, and actually make it stronger and healthier by giving it the natural protein boost it needs. In a bowl, separate egg whites from eggs (start with 2 eggs, but use more if you have longer or thicker locks.) Using a mixer, blend the egg whites until they create a frothy, fluffy texture. Wet your hair, apply the mask, and wait ten minutes before rinsing with shampoo. Your hair will thank you.
Skip The Box…. & The Salon
As the leaves change, I almost always want to change my color as well. Personally, I love a deep burgundy and dark red tones for autumn, but I don’t love paying the bill at a salon or using a harsh, boxed dye. For months now, I have been using Esalon to get salon-quality color that was mixed specifically for me and my unique hair at home. My hair is actually softer and feels healthier with each treatment and I love the relationship I have developed with my colorist and all of her incredible tips. You can try it here and get $10 off your first color. That’s just $15 for custom, salon-quality hair color! To read my full review, click here.
