Learn how to make a face mask without sewing. This homemade mask tutorial is a no sew alternative to other online projects that come in kids and adults sizes.

It’s crazy to think that just last month the world looked so different. Today, cities are being placed in shelter all over the world, our schools have moved entirely online, and we are suddenly worrying more and more about protecting our family and staying healthy.

It can all feel overwhelming.

If you want to make a fitted face mask, you can check out my tutorial HERE. It comes with a printable sewing pattern, video sew-along, pocket for a filter, and wire nose casing for a custom fit.

Hopefully, when you read this, you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. While this (and any homemade mask) will not protect you from Covid-19 alone, it is better than nothing. Hospitals all over the world are even asking for donations to help protect their patients that are not at-risk or to wear over N95 masks for longer wear.

Always call the hospitals around you to see if they are accepting donations and what specs and details they require for donation. Every city and location can differ.

Today’s tutorial on how to make a face mask is a great no sew alternative for those of us who don’t have access to a sewing machine.

How To Make A Face Mask For Kids & Adults

Start out by cutting your fabric. If you are making your DIY mask for kids, cut your fabric to 5″ x 7″ If you are making a homemade mask for an adult, cut to 6″ x 9″

You’ll need one piece of cotton fabric and one piece of flannel. (If you’d like to add a filter to your mask, you can cut
HEPA Filter Bags and place them between your cotton and flannel.)

Next, trim two pieces of elastic to 7″ in length. If you don’t have access to 1/4″ elastic, cut two hair bands in half.

Glue each end to the front (the right side) of your cotton fabric 1/2″ down from the top edge. Use Fabri-Tac for a washable, permanent bond.

Once your elastic is in place, squeeze a thin layer of Fabri-Tac around the perimeter of your fabric, leaving a 2″ gap at the bottom.

Next, place your piece of flannel on top and press to adhere.

Use sewing pins or standard paper clips to hold your elastic and fabric in place while it dries. Let it sit for about an hour.

Since we left a 2″ gap at the bottom of your DIY mask, you’ll have room to flip your project inside out once it’s dry.

Remove your paper clips and gently flip inside out. Squeeze some Fabri-Tac in the 2″ gap and close.

Believe it or not, your homemade mask is nearly complete!

Now all that’s left to do is pleat the short edges. By pleating the short edge of your mask, it is going to create a more comfortable and secure fit around your face. Do this by squeezing a thin strip of Fabri-Tac along the short edge of your DIY mask. Next, make 3 small pleats and hold in place with paper clips.

Leave the paperclips in place until your glue is completely dry. I made mine at night and wore them the following day.

Once your glue is dry, it’s ready to wear!

I hope this tutorial helped ease some stress and make your day a little brighter. May you have a healthy, happy future and make the most of the circumstances.
